Hello
My name is Nasima Pfaffl.- and I’ve been homeschooling for more than 12 years. I have a son who is 23, and two daughters 9 and 12. I have a masters degree in Sociology, non-profit management and advocacy experience. I have been trained as an Orton-Gillingham Reading and Spelling Tutor at the Associate Level. I’ve run camps for kids and been an Odyssey of the Mind Coach. I ran a Pre-K co-op in Florida. I love permaculture, science, engineering and art. I believe in the importance of building community and mutual support groups.
My husband and I grew up in Tucson, but we lived in Florida for a number of years. In Florida, my kids were part of two amazing nature-based community programs. We moved back to Tucson in 2022, and I have had trouble finding anything similar to what we had in Florida; so this year, I’ve decided to try to create a similar community here.
What Age Groups?
I’m looking to find other families who would like to create a learning community in the Oro Valley/Marana Area of Tucson, AZ. I would like the community to include kids from pre-K to high school. The co-op classes or activities we have, and for what age groups, will depend on how many families are interested, ages of their kids, and what areas of interest parent educators have for leading different subjects and age cohorts of children. We can do enrichment activities like art, science or nature exploration, group social play/hang out time, holiday/birthday celebrations, or organize core subjects if there is interest. This will be determined by the community.
Location:
My mother’s house is no longer occupied, and my family has offered to let us use her house for the co-op. Its located near La Canada and Magee. Its on a full acre with plenty of room for urban-farm and nature based activities. There’s a great outdoor play space with both a big kid and younger kid playground and plenty of space for activities and parking. There’s no pets in the house, but there are chickens outside. Parks and libraries are also great locations for co-op activities as well. Where we meet for different activities will be determined by the group.

What Is a Co-op?
A co-op is a group of individuals working together toward a shared goal. A co-op, or cooperative, is a business or organization that is owned and democratically controlled by its members, who are typically also its users. These members join together to meet their common economic, social, educational or cultural needs.
Membership in the Co-op
The administrator of the co-op, Nasima Pfaffl, is in the process of becoming an ESA approved vendor. The co-op will need membership fees from members to cover supplies, materials, and other costs. Invoices and the necessary attestation form will be provided quarterly to families to receive reimbursement from ESA for their co-op membership fees/class fees. The amount of the membership fee will be determined by the founding members.
